{"id":1289,"date":"2024-02-08T04:24:47","date_gmt":"2024-02-07T17:24:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/shootingaustralia.org\/james-willett-all-bronzed-up-at-morocco-world-cup\/"},"modified":"2024-07-25T10:22:24","modified_gmt":"2024-07-25T00:22:24","slug":"james-willett-all-bronzed-up-at-morocco-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/shootingaustralia.org\/james-willett-all-bronzed-up-at-morocco-world-cup\/","title":{"rendered":"James Willett: All Bronzed Up At Morocco World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Overnight, Australia\u2019s James Willett secured the bronze medal in the Men\u2019s Trap event at the Rabat, Morocco ISSF Shotgun World Cup, supporting his campaign towards a third consecutive Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>Willett, who shot a score of 121 out of 125 targets, was the equal top qualifier with David Kostelecky (CZE) and Mohammed Al Rumaihi (QAT). Of his qualification Willett said, \u201cQualification was over two days. Yesterday [day one] I had a really good day shooting 74 out of 75 [targets], and then today 47 out of 50 [day two], to finish on 121 out of 125\u2026It was a tough event but very fair so the scores weren\u2019t super high, but high enough.\u201d Assimilating the range in Rabat to back home, Willet said \u201cThe range felt very similar to the ranges we compete on back home\u2026a bit of an Australian range which was nice to shoot over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shootingaustralia.org\/james-willett-all-bronzed-up-at-morocco-world-cup\/jw2\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10653\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10653 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/shootingaustralia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/JW2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"232\" height=\"308\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although already securing a place in the 6 man final, Willett entered a shoot off with Kostelecky and Al Rumaihi to determine his bib ranking. \u201cThe shoot off for bib was a little bit unexpected. I thought maybe a shoot off to make the final, so it was nice to be shooting off for bib.\u201d With Kostelecky winning the shoot off and securing bib rank 1 for the final, Willett was pleased to secure bib 2. \u201cI was pleased with that, but it ended up costing me the silver medal on countback when tying with David [Kostelecky] at the bronze medal elimination.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shootingaustralia.org\/james-willett-all-bronzed-up-at-morocco-world-cup\/jw3\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10654\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10654 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/shootingaustralia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/JW3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"406\" height=\"305\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Throughout a very close final, and a frequent change in lead, Willett reflected, \u201cIt was tough all the way and the scores were really close. I was happy with how I handled the final and just got a little bit quick towards the end and missed a couple [of targets], resulting in my elimination. But I am really happy with the end result and happy to be bringing home a bronze medal for Australia.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Italy&#8217;s Mauro De Filippis won the gold medal, with Kostelecky winning the silver medal.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/shootingaustralia.org\/james-willett-all-bronzed-up-at-morocco-world-cup\/jw4\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-10651\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-10651 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/shootingaustralia.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/JW4.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"469\" height=\"256\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Willett\u2019s number one supporter, wife Amy, was following her husband\u2019s progress from their hometown in Yarrawonga, Victoria and said, \u201cI am so pleased with James\u2019 result as it means a lot for his preparation this year. He has sacrificed a lot to get this point and is a good lead into 2024.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This World Cup ends a three week international tour for Willett, where he also competed in the Cairo, Egypt World Cup, where he shot a qualification score of 117 out of 125, finishing in 17<sup>th<\/sup> place.<\/p>\n<p>Willett will now head back to Australia where he will prepare for the next domestic nomination event in Sydney (16 to 18 February) as part of the 2024 Paris Olympic team selection process.<\/p>\n<p>Results can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.issf-sports.org\/competitions\/venue\/results.ashx?cshipid=3166\" rel=\"noopener\">here.<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Overnight, Australia\u2019s James Willett secured the bronze medal in the Men\u2019s Trap event at the Rabat, Morocco ISSF Shotgun World Cup, supporting his campaign towards a third consecutive Olympic Games.
